How to Paint Cornhole Boards

Life provides us immense joy throughout its way. And playing cornhole is certainly one of them. So, no doubt, almost all of us love playing cornhole in our free time. But what about making your life a bit more joyous through cornhole painting? Instead of buying an expensive one from the store, once you have built one, start painting it. It’s not a tough job. Your patience and meticulousness would come handy. Here, I present you the easiest ways on how to paint cornhole boards.

What is a cornhole board?

In simple term, cornhole is a semi-indoor game mostly played at the lawn of your hose. And the board is used to count points of the game. There is a hole in the board. If a player puts the ball on the hole it yields 3 points and putting the ball on the board earns 1 point for the player.

Ultimate guideline to paint cornhole boards:

The below steps will guide you through on how to paint your cornhole boards beautifully. Additionally, you can design the boards with different eye catchy stickers and decals. The steps of painting cornhole boards are-

  • Applying sanding and wood putty
  • Applying primer
  • Designing
  • Selecting the paint
  • Commencing the board painting
  • Applying wax coating

So, let’s begin the paint of the board.

Preparation stage:

Now that you have already built an amazing board, it’s high time you print it to show your creativity to your friends and playmates.  However, there are some preparations that you must follow properly –

  1. Fill up all the screws and nails’ holes on the board surface with wood putty or adhesive. However, opting a perfectly built plywood will reduce your workload of using wood putty.
  2. Wait until the putty dries. After that, provide a hand sanding to the board surface to make the surface smooth.

Lastly, before using the primer use a dampened soft cloth or rag to wipe off the surface to ensure that there is no dust left on it.

Applying primer:

The boards are made of plywood and are prone to tiny ups and downs. So it is necessary to make the base a flat one with the application of a primer. There are a number of good primers available in the market but I prefer using Rustoleum primer because of its high stickiness. Stickiness is important for the paint t to settle down on the surface. Use a brush to apply primer as it is tough to remove from anything. It should be a quick process as there is no need for perfection.

Designing:

Now it’s time to show your creativity. You might make a jaw-dropping scenery or paint a minimalistic drawing on the board. There is certainly no limitation. However, complex designs will consume more time too. Personally, I use frog tape to layout the design on the board to get a crisp lining. You might use other painter tapes s well.

Selecting the paint:

There are a million different paints available in the world. So, it is natural to get bamboozled if you go to pick up the paint for the 1st time in the stores. Besides, the associates are not knowledgeable too to assist you. I opt for a semi-glossy paint. But if you want a glossier look go for high gloss paint. Moreover, many people choose different color and shade patterns for the same board.

Commencement of the paint:

Usually, a quart of paint is sufficient for multiple coating on the board. As you start painting, follow these steps-

  1. At first, apply a primary layer of the paint on the board using a paint brush. A roller will do the job too. Drip the brush or the roller in the paint can and use it over the board. Wipe off the excess paint in the rim of the can.
  2. You might either use spray paint to get the job done quickly. In such a case, remove everything from the nearby area to avoid spray paint on them too.

Wax Coating;

As you come to the end, apply a high-quality polycrylic coating over the lately painted surface to ensure a shiny look for a longer period of time. Despite being expensive, this wax coating provides a great performance. So, you shouldn’t worry about the price tag.

Final Verdict:

If you are satisfied that the paint has dried take it out on the lawn and test it. I can imagine how happy you are as you find everyone praising your creativity. So, let’s start the cornhole game. Oh yes, never forget to earn a 3 point whenever you find a scope. Once I scored a straight 15 points! Can you repeat it?
